The Assembly Sergeant-at-Arms Department is a highly specialized P.O.S.T. law enforcement agency dedicated to serving the Legislative Community.  Our sworn peace officers support the protection needs of the California Legislature across the state.

Those with prior dignitary protection experience with a local, state, or federal law enforcement agency, and those who have a strong interest in protection are strongly encouraged to apply.

 

Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms Supervisor (Peace Officer) – Los Angeles

Duties and Responsibilities:

This position will be responsible for the daily supervision of protective duties in the Los Angeles area, although travel to Sacramento and elsewhere will be required based upon the needs of the Department.

Under the direction of the Deputy Chief, an Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms Supervisor plans, supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of protective security and law enforcement staff involved in Assembly house rules, personal security protection and related services and activities; oversees and participates in all work activities; assumes responsibility for assigned special programs, projects or department-wide functions or activities; coordinates activities with other agencies; and performs a variety of administrative and technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

This is a sworn peace officer position, and the carrying of a Department issued firearm is required.  Must be available to travel by air, motor vehicle, and by other means to accomplish assigned duties.  Must be available to work extended hours as necessary when legislative functions dictate, conduct investigations, interview witnesses, collect evidence, and testify in court as required.  

This is a full time position.  Must be available to work rotating shifts and extended hours.  May be required to travel statewide, or outside the state as necessary on short notice.

Requirements:

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by additional college level course work and specialized training in law enforcement, criminal justice, police science, public administration or a related field. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree is highly desirable.
  • Three (3) years of full time experience as a peace officer.
  • Current POST Basic Certificate or Specialized Basic Investigator Certificate
  • POST Supervisory Course, or complete within 1 year of appointment
  • Basic Computer Knowledge
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship
  • Valid California driver’s license and valid U.S. Passport
  • Favorable DMV driver history
  • Satisfactory completion of oral interview
  • Successful completion of POST background investigation
  • Successful completion of a physical and psychological examination

 

Highly Desirable:

  • Prior experience as a law enforcement supervisor
  • A superior commitment to exceptional service
  • A working knowledge of the legislative process
  • Experience providing personal protection to high level persons/events
  • Experience working in a highly dynamic political environment

Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms (Peace Officer) - Laterals and Academy Graduates

Under the direction of a Protective Services Supervisor, an Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms provides dignitary protection for Assemblymembers, and facility protection and response to the California State Capitol, the Assembly Chamber, Legislative offices, committee hearings, and special events throughout the state. 

In addition to her/his law enforcement and protection responsibilities, an Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms ensures decorum, rules, protocol, customs and practices of the Assembly are maintained at all times. She/he also functions as a liaison between the public, staff, lobbyists, Members of the Legislature, and other law enforcement agencies.

  • POST Basic Certificate or Basic Specialized Investigator Certificate

Special Services Division (Non-Sworn / Dispatch)

If you enjoy being at the center of the legislative process, providing exceptional service, and working in a highly visible and dynamic political environment the Special Services Division might be the place for you.   

The Assembly Sergeant-at-Arms Department is a highly specialized agency dedicated to serving the Legislative Community.  Those with prior experience working in the state Capitol or those who have a strong desire to work supporting the legislative process are encouraged to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of a Supervisor, Special Services personnel provide transportation and assistance to Members, set-up of hearing rooms, and staff Legislative Committee Hearings and Session;  ensures decorum, rules, protocol, custom and practices of the Assembly are maintained at all times.  Special Services personnel also serves on the front line in the Department’s dispatch center, answering calls for service from the Legislative Community and dispatching appropriate resources. Special Services personnel serve as a liaison between the public, staff, lobbyists, and Members of the Legislature.

This is a full time position.  Must be available to work rotating shifts and extended hours.  May be required to travel state-wide on short notice.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the U.S.
  • Valid California Driver’s License for a minimum of 5 years
  • Favorable DMV driver history
  • Successful completion of background investigation
  • Have not been convicted of a felony
